As an undergraduate, John studied Chinese language and philosophy at Bennington College in Vermont. In 1992, while studying abroad for a semester at Chengdu University in China, he was first exposed to traditional Chinese medicine and martial arts. He realized that practicing Chinese medicine would be the perfect way to integrate his interest in the healing arts, movement arts, and Chinese language and philosophy.
In 1997, he enrolled in the oldest massage school in the country: The Swedish Institute . While working in numerous health clubs, upscale spas, and chiropractic offices, he learned how powerful massage therapy is, but also what its limitations are. So he went back to school in 2002, enrolling in the 10-semester / 3,340-hour Masters of Traditional Oriental Medicine program at Touro College in New York City, and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2005. As part of this training, John treated patients at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, working in the Orthopedic / Neurological Rehab, Oncology, and Labor & Delivery Departments.
After receiving his acupuncture license, he opened a private practice in Manhattan combining massage therapy with acupuncture, herbal medicine, and adjunctive techniques such as moxibustion, gua sha, and cupping. For over 10 years he operated a successful clinic treating athletes, yogis, Pilates teachers, physical therapists, and also everyone from world-famous rock stars to CEOs to policemen and retired teachers.
John moved with his family to Madison at the beginning of 2016 to take advantage of the family-friendly and athletic culture here. In addition to being a busy clinician, John is also an educator, teaching pathology and medical terminology for massage therapists, and supervising the student clinic at Madison College. He also returns to New York periodically to see old patients, take classes, and collaborate with some very creative and accomplished colleagues, including his sister Siobhan who teaches Gyrotonic.
Outside of the clinic and classroom, he enjoys running, swimming, cycling, and playing with his son.
